Nikhil Chopra: using his physical body to portray different identities and personae

Nikhil Chopra’s artistic practice interweaves live art, drawing, photography, sculpture and installations. Chopra uses his physical body as a vehicle for portraying different identities and personae. This happens in a certain time and place that creates a context in which a transformation of the physical and the existential body occurs, telling a story and exercising narratives that tackle themes like the colonial past, gender, nationalism and community.Through this adoption of a scene, a context or a character Chopra opens up possibilities in which he can experience History, characters and situations first hand. He adopts characters that he doesn’t see as such, rather he sees them as an extension of the self and his personae.
The act of making a large scale landscape drawing as a backdrop becomes an essential tool to locate the body. Most recently Chopra has immersed himself in the landscape of his home in Goa. He has been spending time in his studio making drawings on paper in an attempt to study light while also making sense of how crucial locating the self is, especially in a world reeling from a pandemic.
