Set within MAXXI L’Aquila, a site shaped by the memory of seismic transformation, Aftershock brings together works by Ai Weiwei that reflect on resilience, loss, and the political dimensions of reconstruction. Curated by Tim Marlow, the exhibition engages directly with the context of L’Aquila, where the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake continues to inform the city’s identity.

Through a practice that combines conceptual rigor with social engagement, Ai Weiwei addresses themes of displacement, memory, and the fragility of structures—both physical and societal. The exhibition unfolds as a powerful meditation on rupture and recovery, situating art as a space for reflection, accountability, and renewal.
