HIROSHI SUGIMOTO 'GIACOMETTI / SUGIMOTO: STAGED'

In 2013, MoMA commissioned Hiroshi Sugimoto to photograph sculptures in its garden, leading to the series Past Presence, where Giacometti's Tall Woman was captured in both daylight and dusk. Sugimoto's images drew parallels between the sculpture and the supernatural elements of Japanese Noh theater, blurring the lines between the living and the dead. Curated by Françoise Cohen, the exhibition juxtaposes Giacometti's iconic sculptures with Sugimoto's photographs and incorporates ancient Noh masks, creating a dialogue between apparition and reality.
