Curated by Janet Bellotto and Dr. Woodman Taylor it brings together a selection of artists published within the eight editions of Tribe—a magazine founded in Dubai that is dedicated to covering developments in new media and photography from the Arab World. The exposition creates a dynamic vision of the medium of photography and the Arab world as heritage and culture that is connected to the world at large. It highlights the multifaceted ways in which those who identify as Arab, experience and understand their culture, identity and heritage. The exhibition embracing a vision of the region as deeply intertwined with the rest of the world resisting simplistic notions of what the Arab world itself is. The result is a blend striking reframing of history, of traditional imagery and the evocation of surprising connections. 'Tribe: Contemporary Photography from the Arab World' connects the rich culture and heritage of the Arabian diaspora to the wider world. The exhibition contextualizes an expansive field of image-based work through various themes, celebrates artists both internationally acclaimed and those whose practices have recently been recognized.
