This art festival has continued for 20 years in the vast satoyama of the Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata Prefecture. Zhanna Kadyrova brings her newest project PALIANYTSIA to the Triennale. More than an exhibition, this project is a demonstration that allows the artist to tell not only her story but the story of many Ukrainians in this historic & tragic moment. This project has been conceived and realised from the Transcarpathian region, Western Ukraine, 30km from the Hungarian border, & is co-authored by Denis Ruban. Titled “PALIANYTSIA”, which means bread typically baked in an oven and traditional to Ukraine, it’s a word that has taken on a new function as decipherer for the invading forces due to the Russian invaders’ inability to pronounce it. These works therefore take on an extra meaning, representing not only a fundamental life source that crosses all boundaries of society but an identifier.
