Michelangelo Pistoletto 'The Cubic Meter of Infinity in a Mirroring Cube' through the History of Art

#ContinuaXXLOnline : Through the history of Art with #MichelangeloPistoletto

Along with the 5th edition of Continua XXL Online, Michelangelo Pistoletto retraces the evolution of new perspectives in Art in which he has became an important part of.

_

This edition is dedicated to the work 'The Cubic Meter of Infinity in a Mirroring Cube’, first realized in 2008 in occasion of the artist's exhibition at Galleria Continua #Beijing. A work which found itself in the middle of a 2100 meters corrugated cardboard labyrinth and that created a space of infinite experience.

_

Made up of 6 sheets of mirror, the work belongs to the 'Minus Objects' of 1965-1966, a series which is seen as essential for the birth of #ArtePovera. A new manifestation of the artist’s deeply developed use of the mirrored surface, the cube is the vessel for the ultimate placement of the viewer between what he has before him and what he has behind him, the past being transformed to the future.

Continua XXL Online is an exclusive presentation of some of our artists’ biggest projects. This edition features previously unseen content from Michelangelo Pistoletto and Lorenzo Fiaschi. Browse the viewing room at the link in bio.

Continua XXL Online: JR presents "Giants, Peeking at the City, Havana, Cuba"

The 4th edition of #ContinuaXXLOnline presents #JR and his work “GIANTS, PEEKING AT THE CITY, HAVANA, CUBA”, a huge paste up of a little boy, Alain, who lives in Havana and who met the artist by chance when they were looking at the location for an eventual work to be pasted on the outside wall of ARTE CONTINUA.

Invited by #GalleriaContinua for the 13th Havana Biennial, JR created this work in April 2019. It incorporates many different perspectives, that of a little boy who plays every day in the square of the neighborhood as well as that of the city as a whole. The boy is “peeking” out over the city and towards the sea, the horizon and far-away lands, demonstrating the position of Havana in Cuba as an island nation, separated from the rest of the world yet open to new influences and outlooks.

ART BASEL OVR EVENT | Michelangelo Pistoletto - The Epiphany of the Mirror Paintings

The celebrated Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the leading figures of Arte Povera, will speak about his beginnings as a young artist. He will describe the genesis of the mirror works that marked a crucial shift in his successful career. It is a unique opportunity to interact with one of the most important Masters of the 20th century.

In Michelangelo Pistoletto’s work, mirrors constitute an image of the world, both of humans and society, and of cosmic space. "It seems clear to me that the space in which this reflection takes place is neither limited nor exclusively individual, but is the cosmic space of totality and, therefore, of everyone". (Michelangelo Pistoletto)

“When, in 1961, I began to paint my face on a black ground polished to the point of being a mirror, I saw it coming towards me, standing out in the space of an environment in which everything was moving, and I was shocked. I also realized I no longer had to look at myself in another mirror, but that I could copy myself by looking directly into the canvas” .(Michelangelo Pistoletto).

The event will take place in live streaming on Zoom and Facebook on the 18th of June, at 16:00 PM CET.
