The term “four corners of the world” dates back thousands of years. It is a motif, a way of deciphering the world that, although not factually accurate, has helped human beings in their art, literature and belief systems understand and structure the world around them. Culturally the four corners corresponded to four points on a compass and today, it is a colloquial saying that incorporates all differences and variety, presenting humanity as united.
For this first edition we present the viewing room "Cuban energies in art". GALLERIA CONTINUA Habana opened in Aguila de Oro, a 1940s cinema theater in the middle of Habana’s Chinatown, on November 27, 2015. The XII Havana Biennial in May, earlier that year, was important for this opening as the cinema theatre served as the space for Galleria Continua to present ‘Perimetro’, an in situ work by Daniel Buren before going on to permanently occupy the space. The first exhibition to open in November 2015 was Anclados en el Territorio. It included 6 Cuban artists Alejandro Campins, Elizabet Cerviño, Carlos Garaicoa, Susana Pilar, Reynier Leyva Novo and José Yaque.
The works in this viewing room, by the 10 Cuban artists Alejandro Campins, Iván Capote, Yoan Capote, Elizabet Cerviño, Carlos Garaicoa, Osvaldo González, Luis López-Chávez, José Mesías, Susana Pilar and José Yaque, encompass the ethos behind GALLERIA CONTINUA Habana; that of connecting people through art and expressing Cuba’s unique atmosphere and capability to facilitate the creation of community and communication between people. This viewing room presents a selection of works that bring us to other places, to meet other cultures, to share experiences and ultimately provide enrichment to our lives. Some of the artists present were exhibited in the first exhibition in Cuba and others are friends, relationships and connections made from then until now. Their works tell us their personal stories as well as stories about where they come from.
