Juan Araújo

For years now Juan Araujo has been painting images from the internet and from books, reproducing artworks and photographs he takes, in a research for both the artistic gesture and the essence of the image.

This detail of the famous Blue Bird fresco (ca. 1450 b.C.) from the Minoan royal palace at Knossos in Crete is an illustration from the book L'Art de la Crete, Neolithique et Minoenne by Christian Zervos (1956). The way it is portrayed in the book differs consistently from how it can be seen nowadays in the Knossos museum, yet it is this the image that the artist decided to recreate, focusing on the variety of colours and layers that can be grasped in the illustration.
