Jonathas De Andrade - A study of Race and Class: Bahia >< Santa Fe, 1956 / 2016

When did you first realize that race is an issue in society? Have you experienced racism yourself in your life? Flowing impressions of conversations with the people of Santa Fe while having their portrait taken in February 2016.

The project “A study of Race and Class: Bahia> With this study on his hands, Jonathas decides to make the opposite move and to investigate in the United States how racism is understood there. The original article is a result of a research supported by images that are not included in the publication, which makes him decide to produce portraits with people of today and bring these images closer to the text of the book. This project was carried out in two stages: in Performa NY (2015) and for the exhibition Site Santa Fe (2016). In Santa Fe, the racial composition is marked by the border with Mexico, making racism more of the daily life of immigrants and descendants of the neighboring country, while in New York the experience of the project presented an idea of race marked by heterogeneity and cosmopolitanism of the city whose identity is marked by the presence of foreigners and cultural diversity.
