An exhibition program that exists from 2014 onwards, Beating around the bush, is a means for the Bonnefantem Museum to present its collection in an inquiring way. Said collection is brought into dialogue with external works and this edition sees the inclusion of two works by Antony Gormley, STAY VI 2017 and BOARD 2015, that help narrate the concept that man is central to the Anthropocene in so far as it has led to the construction of societal, political and physical structures that define how we live.

As part of Connect, Bts interdisciplinary global arts project Antony Gormley presents New York Clearing a quantum drawing countering the Euclidean geometry of architecture with the sweeping vectors of a line without beginning or end. In the creation of this looping and swooping line the work will respond to the inherent qualities and behaviour of the aluminium tubing. Here is a structure that in its highs and lows plays with the rhythms of music.

Field for the British Isles, a work from 1993, is a key work in the Arts Council Collection that has come to Firstsite, the East of England’s contemporary visual arts organization. The work has toured the UK and been exhibited at a variety of locations such as Salisbury Cathedral, The Baltic in Gateshead and Tate Britain. At each venue, the composition of the 40,000 tiny terracotta figures is adapted to the space, resembling a dense carpet of tiny faces looking up to the viewer. At Firstsite, the figures fill the rear of the building as well as the main gallery spaces, evoking an endless and all encompassing mass of figures.
