Born in Buenos Aires in 1963, he lives and works in Buenos Aires.
He studied at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires. In Macchi's view, the simpler and cleaner the object, the more it is capable of containing references and the more its relationship with us will be personal and sentimental. This "oblique strategy" and a sharp sense of black humour are characteristics of his work.
The artist often draws on newspapers, blending factual archives with anecdotes, chance, and everyday life. Signs are quietly dismantled and reassembled through a process of "de-familiarization". Macchi’s work frequently incorporates elements of music, literature, and architecture, using maps, sheet music, and cityscapes in unexpected ways. His signature style of poetic fragmentation transforms familiar objects into new, often broken forms, offering fresh interpretations of the ordinary. Macchi is drawn to margins, endings, and fragments, capturing a world in constant transit, where everything is temporary yet filled with subtle humor.
"The random melody that can be obtained by sticking fragments of newspaper headings onto a pentagram, the text drawn from police reports and used as primary material for the construction of a pentagram, nails in the shape of notes - these are some of the works with which Jorge Macchi composes music and the image...
