Jorge Macchi: “For me the works starts with an image, not an idea”
Jorge Macchi works in painting, drawing, installation, sound, video and sculpture. Simplicity in the object is important to Macchi’s work and he deems a simple object to be more capable of holding and communicating references. It is through this simplicity that the object is able to be personal and sentimental for the viewer. He has an almost surrealist approach to objects, exposing hidden connections between our surroundings, history and our own experiences through their presentation.
Macchi shows an interest in margins, boundaries, fragments and pairings, such as presence and absence, fate and chance and the conviviality of conscious actions and automatism. His works consider the anecdotal, chance and every day. The real weight of his works is often to be found in the spaces between instances of sound, or the absences between signs and images. These absences are as influential to the constitution of the work as its present sounds or objects.
Music and sound are important elements. They operate at different levels of materiality and effect – sometimes aurally present and sometimes visually alluded to. Trained as a child to play piano, Macchi’s art naturally involves music and sound to achieve all-encompassing and multi-disciplinary projects.
