Trained as a scientist with a PhD in agricultural sciences, Carsten Höller is often inspired by research and experiments from scientific history as well as present day developments in science. Höller is interested in the experiment, the nature of human relations and psychological states and the biological reasons behind them. This seeps into his interactive installations and sculptures. They provide structures that are capable of stimulating the public into various states of emotion like excitement, confusion and at times, even trepidation.
Throughout his career, Höller’s works have developed across many mediums: film, installation, sculpture, installations in often complex environments, as well as paintings, monumental works in neon, drawings and photographic prints. His works succeed in presenting many contrasts between science and art, aesthetic and ethics, logic and sensuousness, often involving the viewer directly through motor participation and interactive installations or structures.
